October 22, 2026
This December, Millburn, South Orange and Maplewood all hold their downtown holiday celebrations on the same weekend, Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12. Last year the same events were spread over two Saturdays. Turtle Back Zoo's free Holiday Lights also opens and closes on a tighter schedule than in 2025. Together, these changes put most of southern Essex County's holiday plans into a much shorter window.
The tree lightings, the igloos and the cocoa are all coming back, and in 2026 they share two days on the calendar instead of two weeks.
In 2025, South Orange's Hometown Holiday was on Saturday, Dec. 6. Maplewood lit its tree at the Springfield Avenue Gazebo a week later, on Dec. 13. Millburn's Winter Villages ran on both of those Saturdays, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13, at Town Hall Plaza. Millburn's two dates meant a family could visit Winter Villages one Saturday and see a neighboring town's event the other.
The 2026 calendars posted by each organizer tell a different story.
| Event | 2025 date | 2026 date | 2026 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter Villages, Millburn–Short Hills | Sat., Dec. 6 and Sat., Dec. 13 | Fri., Dec. 11 and Sat., Dec. 12 | To be announced |
| Hometown Holiday & Tree Lighting, South Orange | Sat., Dec. 6 | Sat., Dec. 12 | 2 to 6 p.m. |
| Holiday Tree Lighting, Maplewood | Sat., Dec. 13 | Sat., Dec. 12 | 4 to 6 p.m. |
Millburn shows the biggest change. Winter Villages used to fall on two Saturdays a week apart. Now it runs Friday and Saturday back to back. As of its last update in May, Explore Millburn-Short Hills lists the 2026 dates and says more details are coming. South Orange's 2026 listing also says "details coming soon." Until those details are posted, last year's formats are the best guide to what each event includes.
Winter Villages is the only one of the three that starts on Friday. That makes Friday, Dec. 11, the easiest night to go without competing crowds. Last year's Dec. 6 edition ran from 3 to 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 375 Millburn Avenue, and was free to attend.
The 2025 format, as Explore Millburn-Short Hills described it, included free s'mores, cocoa for sale, igloos, firepits, a firetruck Santa, winter crafts, vendors, carolers and shopping promotions in town. Olaf came to the first date and the Grinch to the second. Sponsors included Veterinary Emergency Group, Beyond Young Academy, The Footer Financial Group and Liv Breads.
Last year, the two dates had different characters, so a family could pick the one that suited them. This year's dates are only one day apart. If the event keeps that pattern, both versions will happen on a single weekend. Millburn also has one earlier event before the holiday weekend: the Taste of Millburn Food Tour on Sunday, Nov. 15.
South Orange and Maplewood share Saturday afternoon, and their hours overlap. South Orange runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Maplewood runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Each town's lighting time decides the order.
Maplewood lights its tree at sundown, which comes early on a December afternoon. Last year, South Orange lit its tree at 5:30 p.m. after the performances at Spiotta Park. If South Orange keeps roughly that time in 2026, both lightings can fit into one afternoon:
Check South Orange's listing in early December before you commit to this order. A different lighting time would change the plan.
The two Maplewood event pages list different choruses. Maplewood Arts & Culture names the Seth Boyden and Tuscan 5th grade choruses. The Springfield Avenue Partnership also lists Columbia High School and SOMA Pop Choir. Families coming to hear one particular group should check closer to the date.
The same weekend also overlaps one more way. Columbia High School's choir sang in South Orange last year and appears on this year's Maplewood lineup, and both events are now on the same Saturday afternoon.
The zoo's schedule changes add to the crowding on that weekend.
Holiday Lights 2026 is still free, with no reservations required, from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors walk among more than 50 lit winter and animal characters. The calendar is what changed. The 2025 run had 37 public nights, from Nov. 21 through Jan. 3, closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. The 2026 run has 32:
Two gaps have opened up. Last year, the nightly run started the Friday after Thanksgiving and continued through the following week. This year, the zoo is dark Monday, Nov. 30 through Thursday, Dec. 3. The days after New Year's are also gone. In 2025, the lights stayed on through Saturday, Jan. 3. In 2026, the last night is Dec. 31. Households that used to save the zoo for the quiet first days of January now need to go during December.
Inside, the café is open. There are s'mores outside the café, kettle corn and hot cocoa by the train, zeppole by the sea turtle and holiday treats near the Africa exhibit. The carousel, pony track, gift shop and face painting cost extra. The igloos by the picnic area are the only part that needs a reservation. Each holds 8 to 10 guests for the full 5 to 9 p.m. evening and includes heat, lighting, seating, hot chocolate, s'mores and cookies. You book by email or phone, and no price is posted. The zoo also collects non-perishable food, new toys and gently used coats during the event.
For a zoo night that also includes skating, Codey Arena at 560 Northfield Ave. in West Orange lists 2026 public skating at $14 for adults, $10 for children, seniors and military, and $5 for skate rental. Check its session schedule before you go.
With the three downtowns sharing one weekend, the rest of the season's dates fall around it:
That leaves Dec. 5 and 6 for Montclair and Dec. 11 and 12 for Millburn, South Orange and Maplewood. Zoo nights can fill the weeknights in between, starting Dec. 4.
